English

Religious theme parks and sites, functioning as a form of media, present narratives of religious concepts and events. This fusion of religion, art, and technology serves epistemic, cultural, social, tourism, economic, political, and governance-related functions. The first examples in the modern context emerged around the 17th century, inspired by the biblical notion of the “Holy Land.” Despite being mentioned in media and research literature for four decades, the field has been recognized as a distinct research subject only in the last 10 years. This study aims to introduce these areas and highlight the necessity of attention to them by elucidating the most important governance-related implications. After identifying more than 15 cases, a qualitative analysis of the related scholarly and media literature is undertaken from a governance and policy perspective. Issues covered in relation to discourse elements, religious tourism, archaeological activities, and certain military actions highlight the significance of the Israeli regime beyond Judaism and Christianity in this regard. Apart from that, the implications in the Christian context, despite reduced prominence in recent years, include some institutional support, with an emphasis on the “Holy Land,” and the story of Noah’s Ark. In Islam, some cases are marked by common religious themes, while others are characterized by military-related spiritual symbols. However, a disregard for important projects and strategic ideas is evident in the Islamic setting.
