The 38-day war between Iran and the US-Israel alliance in 2026 was not merely a military confrontation but also a discursive arena for the construction of antagonistic identities. Drawing on a combined theoretical framework of Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory and Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis, this study conducts an in-depth analysis of three social media posts from the parties involved in the recent war: Donald Trump's post on Truth Social (April 7, 2026) with the theme "Tonight a whole civilization will die," Benjamin Netanyahu's tweet (June 12, 2026) with the theme "As long as I am Prime Minister," and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf's tweet (May 29, 2026) with the theme "We seize concessions with missiles." The findings reveal that all three discourses employ distinct strategies for othering: Trump utilizes the "schism between the people and the state" to justify the threat of civilizational destruction; Netanyahu ties Israel's security survival to his own political survival through "personalization of threat" and "genocide accusation"; and Ghalibaf challenges liberal diplomacy through a "power-oriented discourse" and reduces the "Other" to the position of an ignorant learner. Despite their profound differences, all three discourses share the claim of "self-defense" and "reactiveness"—a finding that demonstrates the "victimized self and threatening other" pattern operates beyond national borders. This study demonstrates that tweets, as a concise discursive genre, can carry the most complex strategies of othering and legitimization, and monitoring them during crises provides an effective tool for analyzing future conflicts.
