Political cartoons are considered an influential medium for representing ideologies because they can convey complex political concepts through humor, satire, and visual symbols. Cartoons constitute a language understood worldwide and serve as a powerful instrument for criticizing power in contexts where formal and diplomatic language fails to articulate the truth. The present study aims to explore the latent meanings embedded in cartoons by conducting a semiotic analysis of eight selected foreign political cartoons featuring Donald Trump as the central subject and focusing on the recent confrontation between Iran and the United States. These cartoons were produced and published in 2026. The research adopts a qualitative approach based on Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, combined with linguistic analysis. Through examining signs, denotative and connotative meanings, and linguistic elements, the study investigates how the confrontation between Iran and the United States is represented. The findings indicate that the cartoons, by employing political satire, challenge Trump’s power seeking policies and highlight his failure in confronting Iran, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz. All the analyzed cartoons, either directly or indirectly, portray Trump’s defeat and inability to deal with Iran. Furthermore, peace in these cartoons is depicted merely as rhetorical discourse rather than as a practical action. The cartoons also suggest that in contemporary American politics, objective truth has lost its significance and has been replaced by constructed narratives.
